Working across the boundaries of digital media, sculpture, and installation, Merve Mepa brings together historical and contemporary technologies, including local and algorithmic forms of knowledge; in doing so, she intends to position technology not as an impartial tool but rather as a material-bound mechanism that carries stratified regimes of power and meaning. Instead of reducing this mechanism to a set of representations and flattening their sociological, economic, and environmental dimensions, Mepa focuses on the operational dimension of technology by momentarily intervening in processes thought to be inevitable. Her work couples infrastructural specimen from everyday surroundings and digital environments with controversial questions around modalities of accessing information, the construction of boundaries, as well as the conditional—and sometimes piecemeal—availability of information for different audiences.
